HyperText Markup Language, better known as HTML, is the language used to design websites. HyperText is a language of web development that defines the link between web pages, while MarkUp defines the text document within the tag and defines the structure of a webpage. In easier language, it annotates lines of text so a computer can read it and use it to manipulate a webpage. The combination of the two creates a language that web browsers use to manipulate text, images, and other content to ensure that it is displayed in the correct format. Using predefined elements and tags, HTML tells a browser how to properly display each item, from the first tag at the top of the webpage to the very last tag at the bottom of the webpage.

HTML is the basic structure by which all web pages are created.

The building blocks of all HTML pages are:

  • Document type declaration (more commonly known as “doctype”) – This appears at the top of any HTML file and declares that the document is HTML.
  • Root element – This is used to validate the page, as well as to declare the language that the page will be in. All other parts of the webpage will be contained here. It is also divided into the <head> and <body> sections. The <head> section contains important information about the document, such as character encoding and links to CSS files, which aren’t visible to the visitor of the webpage. The <body> section contains everything that the website visitor will see, such as text and images.
